Taking misoprostol by mouth

Misoprostol can make the uterus contract and the cervix soften. It is used in different clinical situations, and the correct route is part of the treatment plan. Oral use may cause cramping, vaginal bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills, or a temporary rise in temperature. These effects can overlap with warning signs, so your written advice matters.

Swallow the tablets exactly as directed with the recommended amount of water. Do not change to vaginal, buccal, or sublingual use unless your clinician tells you to. Note when you take each dose and monitor bleeding, pain, and temperature if advised. Use pads rather than tampons while assessing bleeding, and arrange transport and phone access in case you need help.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Call your clinician for persistent fever, increasing pain, foul-smelling discharge, or symptoms that do not fit the expected plan. Severe one-sided pain or collapse can signal an emergency and should not be monitored at home.
