Taking mifepristone and misoprostol at the same time

Mifepristone changes how progesterone acts and prepares the uterus. Misoprostol then causes the uterus to contract and the cervix to soften. The timing, route, and dose depend on why the medicines were prescribed, such as miscarriage care or another pregnancy-related treatment. Do not substitute a different route or repeat a dose because bleeding seems light.

Follow the written plan exactly, including which medicine comes first and where each tablet is placed or swallowed. Have sanitary pads, fluids, a thermometer, and access to a phone. Cramping and vaginal bleeding can occur; nausea, diarrhoea, chills, or a short-lived fever may also happen. Keep your follow-up appointment so a clinician can confirm that treatment is complete.

Get urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, trouble breathing, confusion, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Contact your care team promptly for persistent fever, worsening pain, foul-smelling discharge, or no bleeding when your instructions say bleeding should occur. If you may have an ectopic pregnancy, urgent assessment is needed because these medicines do not treat it.

Ask which medicine to take first, the exact interval between them, what to do after vomiting, how pain relief should be used, and how completion will be checked. Ask whom to call outside clinic hours and whether you need to avoid sex, tampons, or travel during recovery.
