What is Treponema pallidum in syphilis?

Short answer
Treponema pallidum is the bacterium that causes syphilis and spreads through direct contact with infectious sores.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the infection behaves
Treponema pallidum can enter through small breaks in skin or through moist tissue during sexual contact. Syphilis may begin with a single sore, followed by a rash or other general symptoms. Symptoms can fade while the infection remains present, so feeling better does not prove that it has cleared.
Without treatment, infection can remain quiet and later affect organs such as the eyes, ears, brain, heart or blood vessels. The exact course varies, and symptoms alone cannot identify the stage. A clinician combines your history, examination and test results.
How it is checked and treated
Ask for an STI assessment if you have had sexual contact with a person who has syphilis, notice a painless sore or rash, or are unsure of your status. Blood tests are commonly used; a clinician may also examine or sample a visible sore. Share information about previous diagnoses and treatment because this helps interpret results.
If syphilis is diagnosed, take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and attend follow-up testing. Avoid sexual contact until your clinician explains when it is appropriate to resume, and encourage recent partners to seek assessment.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt care for a new sore, rash on the palms or soles, unexplained swollen glands, or a known exposure. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain or vision loss, hearing changes, severe headache, confusion, weakness or difficulty walking. Pregnancy makes prompt testing especially important.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tests you need, what stage is being considered, whether partners need testing, how treatment will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger urgent review. Ask for clear advice about sexual contact during treatment and follow-up.
