If a sore is present, the clinician may discuss a sample from it. Test timing matters: an early test may not detect a recent infection, so follow-up testing can sometimes be advised.

You do not need to wait for symptoms before requesting a check. Ask whether other STI tests are appropriate for your situation. Until you receive advice, use barriers and avoid contact with any sore. If syphilis is found, take the prescribed antibiotic treatment, attend follow-up, and discuss partner notification.

Arrange prompt testing after a partner tells you they have syphilis, or if you develop a painless sore, unusual rash, swollen glands, or unexplained fever. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision changes, hearing changes, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or balance problems. Pregnancy or possible pregnancy is another reason to request prompt testing rather than waiting for symptoms.
