Can syphilis cause fatigue?

Fatigue may occur during the early stages of syphilis as the immune system responds to infection. It can appear with fever, a sore throat, swollen glands, headache, muscle aches, or a rash that may include the palms and soles. Some people have few or no symptoms, while others notice general illness.

Fatigue is common in many conditions, including viral infections, sleep problems, anaemia, medication effects, and stress. Its presence does not show that syphilis is the cause. A sexual exposure, painless sore, unusual rash, or diagnosed partner makes STI testing more relevant.

Arrange STI screening if fatigue follows a possible exposure or occurs with a sore, rash, swollen glands, or fever. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether they are improving, and which medicines or supplements you use. Mention pregnancy or a partner's diagnosis.

If syphilis is confirmed, take the prescribed antibiotic as directed and attend follow-up. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid sexual contact until your clinician gives advice. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics because the correct medicine and schedule depend on the infection's stage.

Seek urgent help for severe headache, confusion, weakness, trouble walking, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden vision changes, or new hearing loss. Contact a clinician promptly for fatigue with a widespread rash, high fever, or possible syphilis during pregnancy.

Ask whether STI testing is appropriate, whether another cause of fatigue should be checked, when results are reliable, and what symptoms should prompt earlier review.
