What should you know about syphilis affects which part of the body?

The first sore often appears where bacteria entered, such as the genitals, anus, rectum, mouth or throat, and it may be painless. Later, skin changes and swollen lymph nodes can occur. The infection may also involve the eyes, ears or nervous system, sometimes with symptoms that are subtle or absent.

A body location does not identify the infection by itself. Sores, rashes and swollen glands have many causes, and symptoms can disappear between stages. Clinical history, examination and STI Screening are needed to assess exposure and choose appropriate tests.

Get prompt medical help for eye pain, new vision changes, hearing loss, severe headache, confusion, weakness, numbness or difficulty walking. Pregnancy with possible exposure also warrants early assessment. Sudden neurological symptoms or major vision loss require emergency care.

Ask which body areas need examination, which tests can detect infection, whether eye or nervous-system review is needed, how treatment affects sexual contact, how partners should be informed, and when follow-up is required.
