Short answer

Tranexamic acid is a medicine that helps reduce bleeding by slowing the breakdown of blood clots, and its syrup should be used as prescribed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it does

When a blood clot forms, the body gradually breaks it down. Tranexamic acid slows that breakdown, which can help control some types of heavy bleeding. A syrup formulation may be easier to take for some people. It does not treat the underlying reason for bleeding, so the cause still needs review when symptoms are new, severe or recurrent.

Using it carefully

Take the prescribed amount at the prescribed times and use the measuring device supplied with the medicine. Tell your clinician about previous blood clots, kidney problems, vision changes, pregnancy, or medicines that affect clotting. Do not share the medicine or extend the course without advice. Tranexamic acid is used in care for [Heavy Bleeding](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/tranexamic-acid-for-heavy-bleeding/) and in some dermatology plans for [Melasma](/treatments/medical-dermatology/tranexamic-acid-for-melasma/).

When to get urgent help

Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, severe headache, weakness, or new vision disturbance. Seek prompt assessment for bleeding that is heavy, persistent, associated with faintness or occurs during pregnancy. These symptoms need evaluation rather than extra doses.

Questions to ask

Ask why tranexamic acid is recommended, how long to take it, what to do after a missed dose, whether your medical history changes the choice, and how you will know the bleeding needs further investigation.
