What should you know about Synthes plates and screws?

A plate rests against the bone and screws anchor it to one or more fragments. The arrangement may support a fracture, stabilize a joint, maintain an osteotomy correction, or assist fusion. The exact design depends on the bone, fracture pattern, bone quality, and movement expected during healing. Hardware can sometimes be felt beneath the skin, especially where soft tissue is thin.

The brand name identifies a manufacturer; it does not by itself describe your diagnosis or determine whether removal is needed. Your operative report and imaging show the location and purpose of the implants.

Follow the surgeon's limits on weight-bearing, lifting, driving, and wound care. Attend scheduled reviews so healing and alignment can be checked. Keep the incision clean as instructed, take prescribed medicines safely, and use physiotherapy only within the agreed range. Do not try to adjust, remove, or press on the hardware. Plates and screws may remain in place when they are not causing a problem; removal is a separate procedure with its own considerations.

Contact the team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound opening, fever, worsening pain, new weakness or numbness, or a sudden change in limb shape or function. Seek emergency care for severe swelling, a cold or pale limb, chest pain, or trouble breathing.

Ask what the plate is supporting, how much weight or motion is allowed, how healing will be checked, whether the hardware is expected to stay, and which symptoms need same-day advice.
