Symptoms similar to mumps

Mumps commonly affects the salivary glands near the cheeks and jaw, causing tender swelling, pain when chewing, fever, headache, and tiredness. Similar symptoms may result from other viral infections, blocked salivary ducts, dental problems, or swollen lymph nodes. One-sided swelling, pus near a tooth, or a sore throat may point to a different cause. Vaccination history helps guide assessment but does not replace it.

Arrange a GP consultation if swelling or fever continues, especially after close contact with someone who has mumps or if your MMR vaccination history is incomplete. Rest, drink fluids, choose soft foods if chewing hurts, and avoid sharing cups or utensils. Stay away from school, work, or group settings until a clinician advises when it is safe to return.

Seek urgent help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, a seizure, difficulty breathing or swallowing, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or sudden testicular or lower abdominal pain. Prompt assessment is also needed if facial swelling becomes rapidly worse, the skin is very red and hot, or you feel severely unwell.

Ask whether the swelling is in a salivary gland or lymph node, whether testing or isolation advice is needed, and when you can return to normal activities. Ask whether you need to review your MMR vaccination record or protect close contacts.
