Symptoms of vertebral osteomyelitis

The infection affects one or more vertebrae and can irritate nearby discs, joints, nerves, or the spinal cord. Pain is often deep, persistent, and worse with movement, but it may not improve fully with rest. Fever may be present, although its absence does not exclude infection. Some people develop reduced appetite, sweats, or a general feeling of illness. Pain after a recent bloodstream infection, procedure, wound, or injection is relevant information. Diabetes, immune suppression, and other health conditions can also influence risk, so tell the clinician about them.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly when back pain is persistent and comes with fever, chills, unexplained fatigue, or a recent infection. Assessment may include a neurological examination, blood tests, and spine imaging; a sample may sometimes be needed to identify the organism. Treatment is directed by the clinical findings and may involve antimicrobial medicine, monitoring, and occasionally surgery. Avoid using leftover antibiotics because they can make later testing less informative.

Go to emergency care for new weakness, difficulty walking, spreading numbness, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Severe back pain with fever, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness also needs immediate attention. These features can signal pressure on spinal nerves or a spreading infection.

Ask which findings suggest infection, whether blood cultures or imaging are needed, how treatment will be monitored, and what changes should trigger an urgent return.
