Symptoms of Tampon Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome is a severe reaction to toxins made by bacteria. It can occur during tampon use, but a tampon is not the only possible setting and symptoms can have other causes. The illness often feels abrupt: fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or a rapidly worsening weakness.

Low blood pressure may cause faintness or confusion. A widespread red rash, red eyes, sore throat, peeling skin later on, breathing difficulty, or reduced urine can occur. Do not use the absence of a rash or pelvic pain to rule it out.

Remove the tampon if one is in place and call emergency services straight away if toxic shock is possible. Keep the product or packaging only if it can be done without delaying help. Emergency care is needed for sudden fever with faintness, severe weakness, confusion, breathing trouble, repeated vomiting, severe muscle pain, or a rapidly spreading rash.
