Symptoms of Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome

This illness is linked to invasive infection with group A Streptococcus. Symptoms may begin with fever, chills, intense muscle or wound pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and a rapidly worsening sense of illness. The infection may start in the skin, soft tissues, throat, or genital tract; the original site can look less dramatic than the person's overall condition.

As illness progresses, low blood pressure, fast breathing, confusion, extreme weakness, reduced urine, or difficulty staying awake can appear. A red rash or severe tenderness, swelling, or skin colour change may occur, but a rash is not required.

Call emergency services immediately if this pattern is possible. Do not wait for symptoms to settle, arrange a routine appointment, or attempt to manage severe illness at home. Tell responders about recent surgery, childbirth, a wound, skin infection, sore throat, or vaginal infection, and take a list of medicines if it is readily available.

Treat sudden fever with severe pain, vomiting, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, rapidly spreading redness, or profound weakness as an emergency.
