Symptoms of spinal cord compression at C4-C5

C4-C5 identifies levels in the neck portion of the spine. Pressure there can affect nerve signals travelling to the arms, hands, trunk, and legs. Symptoms may include pain radiating from the neck, tingling, clumsy hands, a heavy feeling in the limbs, stiffness, weakness, unsteady walking, or altered sensation. Bladder or bowel changes can occur when the spinal cord is significantly affected. Causes include tumour, bone disease, disc or other structural problems; symptoms require examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Treat new or worsening neurological symptoms as urgent. Keep the neck supported and avoid driving yourself if weakness, poor balance, or severe pain is present. Contact an emergency service or the treating team and describe when the symptoms began, how they changed, and whether there is a cancer history. Assessment may include a neurological examination and urgent imaging to locate the pressure and guide treatment.

Call emergency services for rapidly worsening weakness, inability to walk, repeated falls, new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness spreading through the limbs or body, severe neck pain after injury, or trouble breathing. Do not wait for a routine appointment. Prompt treatment can be needed to protect movement, sensation, and other nerve functions.

Ask which spinal level is affected, what imaging is needed, whether the cord is under pressure, and which treatment should start first. Discuss medicines for pain or swelling, Palliative Radiotherapy, surgery, mobility support, and warning signs to report immediately.
