Symptoms of prostate cancer in men

Urinary changes may include starting and stopping, straining, dribbling, passing urine often at night, or feeling that the bladder has not emptied. These problems commonly have non-cancer causes, including an enlarged prostate or infection. Prostate cancer can also be found before symptoms appear through an assessment prompted by personal risk or test results. Persistent back, hip, or pelvic pain needs review, particularly when it affects movement or sleep.

Arrange a medical appointment for new or persistent urinary difficulty, blood, sexual changes, or unexplained bone pain. Bring a list of medicines and note stream changes, night-time urination, pain, fever, and visible blood. The clinician may discuss examination, urine testing, and blood tests, then decide whether imaging or referral is needed. A result is interpreted with the whole clinical picture.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have heavy blood in the urine, fever with urinary symptoms, severe new back pain, leg weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These signs can reflect blockage, infection, or pressure on nerves and need rapid assessment. Do not assume that a urinary symptom proves prostate cancer.

Ask what may explain the symptoms, which tests are useful, whether medicines are contributing, and what result would lead to referral. If cancer is diagnosed, ask about monitoring, Radiotherapy, surgery, and treatments for symptoms affecting bones or urination.
