Symptoms of ovarian cancer in an older woman

A change that is new, frequent, or gradually worsening deserves attention. Possible symptoms include feeling full after eating a small amount, a swollen abdomen, pelvic pressure, back discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea, needing to pass urine more often, tiredness, or weight loss without trying. After menopause, any vaginal bleeding should be assessed. None of these symptoms confirms ovarian cancer; digestive, urinary, hormonal, medication-related, and other gynaecological conditions can cause similar changes.

Keep a brief record of when symptoms began, how often they occur, food or activity triggers, bleeding, bowel and bladder changes, and medicines. Arrange an appointment with a doctor or gynaecology team. The assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and imaging such as a Pelvic Ultrasound. If a tumour is found, further tests help identify its type and extent before treatment choices are discussed.

Seek prompt medical advice for post-menopausal bleeding, a steadily enlarging abdomen, ongoing vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, severe or increasing pain, new breathlessness, fainting, or marked weakness. Seek emergency help for sudden severe pain, collapse, or difficulty breathing. A symptom’s persistence and severity guide urgency; they do not determine whether it is cancer.

Ask what causes should be considered, which examination or scan is appropriate, whether medicines could explain the change, and how results will be communicated. If cancer is diagnosed, ask about treatment goals, genetic testing, surgery, chemotherapy, and supportive care.
