Symptoms of mouth cancer due to tobacco

Tobacco can irritate the lining of the mouth and is linked with changes in oral cells. Concerning findings may occur on the tongue, gums, inner cheek, lips, roof of the mouth, or floor of the mouth. A sore, patch, or lump may also result from trauma, infection, dental problems, or another non-cancerous condition. A dentist or doctor may inspect the area, feel nearby tissues and neck, and arrange further testing when a change persists.

Arrange an oral examination for a sore, patch, lump, bleeding area, unexplained pain, loose tooth, numbness, voice change, or swallowing difficulty that persists or returns. Record when it began and whether tobacco, alcohol, dentures, or sharp teeth seem to affect it. Stopping tobacco removes ongoing irritation and is useful at any stage. If cancer is diagnosed, treatment may include tumour removal surgery, neck dissection, radiotherapy, or a combination selected for the site and extent of disease.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, rapidly increasing swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, inability to swallow fluids, or severe dehydration. Contact a dentist or doctor promptly for a persistent ulcer, patch, lump, unexplained bleeding, or numbness. Do not wait for pain: mouth cancer can sometimes produce a visible change before it becomes painful.
