Symptoms of hepatitis C in males

Hepatitis C can inflame the liver without causing an obvious change in how you feel. If symptoms develop, they may include low energy, nausea, reduced appetite, muscle or joint aches, a mild fever, or discomfort in the upper right abdomen. Liver inflammation may later cause itching, dark urine, pale stools, or jaundice. These features are not unique to hepatitis C, so a symptom cannot establish the diagnosis.

Book a GP consultation if you have symptoms, a possible blood exposure, or a clinician has mentioned abnormal liver tests. Diagnosis generally requires blood testing, including a test for hepatitis C antibodies and, when indicated, a test for current virus. Do not share needles, razors, or toothbrushes, and use care around blood. Get urgent care for jaundice accompanied by confusion, severe sleepiness, repeated vomiting, significant abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, or black stools. Seek prompt medical advice for worsening jaundice, unusual bleeding, or rapidly increasing weakness. A recent needle injury or other possible exposure should be discussed quickly so that the right testing and follow-up can be considered.
