Short answer

Depression in teens may appear as persistent low mood, loss of interest, irritability, fatigue, sleep or appetite changes, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal or thoughts of self-harm.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How depression can look

Teen depression does not always look like sadness. A young person may become unusually irritable, stop enjoying friends or activities, struggle with schoolwork, or seem tired and slowed down. Sleep may become difficult, or the teen may sleep during the day and still feel unrefreshed. Anxiety, physical complaints and social withdrawal can occur alongside depression.

One difficult day is not enough to identify a condition. Concern rises when changes persist, recur or interfere with relationships, learning, self-care or usual interests. Insomnia and other sleep problems can overlap with mood symptoms, so a careful assessment matters.

How to support a teen

Choose a calm private moment and describe the changes you have noticed without blame. Ask directly whether they have felt hopeless or thought about hurting themselves; asking does not plant the idea. Listen, take the answer seriously and arrange an appointment with a GP or mental-health professional.

Keep routines simple: regular meals, a consistent sleep opportunity, gentle activity and contact with a trusted person. Do not pressure the teen to recover through willpower or dismiss symptoms as ordinary moodiness. Share relevant changes with the clinician, including medicines, substance use, school difficulties and sleep.

When urgent help is needed

Seek emergency help immediately if a teen says they may harm themselves or someone else, has a plan, has taken an overdose, is severely confused, cannot care for basic needs or is experiencing hallucinations. Stay with them, reduce access to medicines or weapons and contact local emergency services. Do not leave them alone while waiting for help.

Questions for the clinician

Ask what symptoms suggest depression, whether sleep or anxiety needs separate assessment, what treatment choices are available, how family members should respond to risk, and what follow-up plan will track safety and progress.
