Symptoms of cholera in humans

Large amounts of watery stool can remove water and electrolytes from the body. A person may develop a dry mouth, intense thirst, tiredness, dizziness on standing, muscle cramps, reduced urination, or a fast heartbeat. Some infected people have mild symptoms, while others become seriously dehydrated. These features can overlap with other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm cholera; recent travel, unsafe water, affected contacts, and testing may help a clinician judge the possibility.

Give an oral rehydration solution in frequent small sips, following the product instructions. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and try again with smaller amounts. Keep food light when tolerated and continue breastfeeding. Separate towels, clean toilet surfaces, and wash hands with soap and water to reduce spread. Contact a medical service promptly for suspected cholera, especially if stools are frequent or the person has a health condition that increases dehydration risk.

Go to urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe drowsiness, inability to drink, ongoing vomiting, very little urine, marked weakness, or cool pale skin. Emergency help is needed if the person collapses or cannot be woken normally. Do not drive someone who is faint or confused; ask emergency services for advice.
