What should you know about symptoms of a molar pregnancy at 5 weeks?

A molar pregnancy is an uncommon pregnancy-related condition in which placental tissue develops abnormally. Early symptoms can resemble an ordinary pregnancy, so nausea, breast tenderness, or a positive pregnancy test cannot identify it. Possible warning signs include vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent vomiting, pelvic pressure or pain, and a uterus that seems larger than expected for the stage of pregnancy. Some people have no distinctive symptoms at five weeks.

Bleeding in early pregnancy has several possible causes and does not by itself confirm a molar pregnancy. A clinician may use a pregnancy hormone blood test and ultrasound, considering the dates and examination findings.

Contact an obstetric or early-pregnancy service promptly if you have bleeding, significant vomiting, pelvic pain, dizziness, or concerns about how the pregnancy is developing. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe. Tell the clinician the first day of your last period, test dates, bleeding pattern, pain location, and medicines. If a molar pregnancy is diagnosed, specialist follow-up monitors recovery and pregnancy hormone levels; treatment plans are individual.

Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or vomiting that prevents fluids staying down. These signs need immediate assessment in any early pregnancy and should not be judged by how likely a particular diagnosis seems.

Ask which tests are needed now, when an ultrasound is appropriate, and what the bleeding or pain could mean. Ask how results will be followed, who to contact outside clinic hours, and whether treatment such as chemotherapy could ever be relevant after specialist assessment.
