What should you know about symptoms before missed miscarriage?

A missed miscarriage means the pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not started passing the pregnancy tissue. Some people notice reduced pregnancy symptoms, light spotting or mild cramps; others notice nothing unusual. Nausea easing or breast tenderness changing does not confirm a miscarriage, because symptoms naturally fluctuate.

Confirmation usually requires an ultrasound and sometimes repeat assessment to clarify the findings. A diagnosis should not be made from symptoms alone. If you are waiting for an appointment, emotional reactions can be intense even when physical symptoms are limited.

Contact your pregnancy care team if you have bleeding, cramps, reduced pregnancy symptoms that worry you, or uncertainty after a scan. Keep any appointment for the recommended ultrasound or follow-up. Once a missed miscarriage is confirmed, the clinician can explain expectant, medical or surgical management, including what bleeding and pain may be like and how follow-up will work.

You may wish to have a trusted person with you and ask about emotional support. Avoid taking medicines or using treatments for miscarriage without medical guidance, especially if the diagnosis has not been confirmed.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness, fever or feeling very unwell.
