What should you know about a swollen upper tummy?

Short answer
A swollen upper tummy can reflect digestion, fluid, or an enlarged organ, so persistent fullness or pain deserves a clinical examination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Upper abdominal swelling may involve digestive organs or fluid.
- Record
- Note meals, pain, fullness, nausea, bowel changes, and skin colour.
What upper swelling may mean
The upper abdomen contains the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and bowel. Indigestion, constipation, inflammation, or a change in one of these organs may create pressure or visible fullness. Fluid in the abdomen can also produce a stretched sensation. Liver cancer, ovarian cancer, and myelofibrosis are examples of conditions that may be considered in particular clinical contexts, but upper swelling by itself does not establish any diagnosis.
Describe whether the swelling is central or more noticeable on one side, whether it follows eating, and whether you have nausea, early fullness, pain, fever, yellow skin, or changes in stool or urine.
What to do next
Arrange medical review when the change lasts, returns, grows, or interferes with eating or movement. A clinician may feel the abdomen, review medicines and health history, and request blood tests or imaging. Keep a brief symptom record and avoid assuming that a new swelling is simply bloating.
When to seek care
Get urgent care for sudden severe upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, a hard or rigid abdomen, blood in vomit or stools, yellowing with marked illness, fever, or difficulty breathing. Rapidly increasing swelling or pain after an injury also needs prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which organs may explain the location, whether an examination or scan is needed, and what symptoms would change the urgency. Ask how to prepare for tests and when you should return if the swelling remains after initial assessment.
Questions people ask
Is upper tummy swelling always serious?
No. Digestive causes are possible, but persistent, painful, or changing swelling should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.
What tests might be used?
Depending on the examination, a clinician may use blood tests, ultrasound, or other imaging to investigate the cause.
