What should you know about a swollen tummy and pain?

Gas, constipation, indigestion, infection, medication effects, and problems involving abdominal organs can all cause swelling and pain. Fluid collecting in the abdomen is another possibility; it may make the tummy feel heavy, stretched, or increasingly full. Liver disease, ovarian conditions, and disorders affecting blood-forming tissues can sometimes contribute, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice where the pain sits, whether it follows meals or bowel movements, and whether swelling changes during the day. Tell a clinician about vomiting, fever, bowel or urine changes, reduced appetite, breathlessness, or a feeling of fullness after eating a small amount.

Contact a clinician for ongoing, recurrent, or unexplained swelling with pain. They may examine the abdomen and arrange blood tests, ultrasound, or other imaging. Until reviewed, record meals, bowel movements, pain episodes, abdominal size changes, and medicines. Avoid taking repeated pain or laxative doses without checking that they are suitable for you.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, black or bloody stools, inability to pass stool or gas, fever with marked illness, yellowing of the skin, or new breathing difficulty. Sudden swelling with intense pain also needs prompt assessment.
