What should you know about swollen top lip overnight?

Overnight swelling can follow a new food, medicine, lip product, toothpaste, insect bite, pressure while sleeping, or an unnoticed injury. Angioedema presents with sudden deeper swelling of the lips and may occur without a visible rash. A cold sore may begin with tingling before blisters appear, while infection is more concerning when the area is hot, increasingly painful, or associated with fever.

Check whether the swelling is limited to the upper lip or involves the tongue, eyelids, face, or throat. Note itching, hives, tingling, blisters, dental pain, discharge, and any new exposure from the previous day.

Remove suspected products, rinse gently, and use a cool compress wrapped in clean fabric. Avoid squeezing the lip, applying harsh home remedies, or trying a food or medicine again to test it. Take a clear photo and write down recent foods, medicines, supplements, cosmetics, bites, and dental work.

Arrange same-day medical advice if the swelling is unexplained, persists, worsens, recurs, or becomes painful or warm. A clinician can decide whether allergy, dental, skin, or other assessment is needed.

Seek emergency help immediately if the tongue or throat swells, breathing becomes difficult or noisy, swallowing is hard, the voice changes, or you feel faint, weak, or confused. Rapidly increasing facial swelling can also signal a serious reaction and should not be watched at home.
