Painful Swollen Lip on One Side: What to Know

Pain after biting, a burn, pressure, or a knock can indicate local tissue irritation. A painful tooth, swollen gum, bad taste, or pain with chewing points toward a dental source. Increasing warmth, redness, tenderness, fever, or drainage raises concern for infection. A blister or grouped sore may follow a different course from a deep lump. Angioedema usually causes deeper swelling and can include itching or hives, although pain does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may need to inspect the mouth and surrounding skin.

Use a cool compress over a clean cloth and avoid biting, rubbing, squeezing, or puncturing the swollen area. Pause new lip products and rinse gently if a product may have irritated the mouth. Choose soft foods if chewing hurts and keep fluids available. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics or put strong chemicals on the lip. Record the onset, side, pain level, temperature if feverish, dental symptoms, and any new exposure so the clinician can see whether the problem is changing.

Emergency care is required for trouble breathing or swallowing, tongue or throat swelling, voice change, or faintness. Seek prompt care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, spreading redness, heat, pus, fever, or swelling near a painful tooth.
