Swollen One Side of the Lip: What to Know

A bite, pressure during sleep, shaving or waxing irritation, an insect bite, or a small injury can affect one side. A sore tooth, gum inflammation, or dental work can cause nearby lip or cheek swelling. Local infection is more likely to bring increasing warmth, redness, tenderness, fever, or drainage. Angioedema can affect one or both sides and may involve the face, tongue, or throat. The side involved helps describe the pattern, but it does not diagnose the cause.

Look at the lips, gums, and inside of the cheek in good light, without squeezing the area. Stop any new product that touched the mouth and rinse gently. A cool compress can ease discomfort from mild irritation or injury. Note pain, itching, hives, tooth symptoms, fever, and whether the swelling is enlarging. Seek dental advice when there is tooth or gum pain; seek medical advice when the swelling is spreading or has no clear local trigger.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling, voice change, faintness, or trouble swallowing.
