Swollen oil gland on the face

Oil glands produce sebum, which helps protect the skin. A pore can become blocked with oil and dead skin, forming a spot or small cyst. Inflammation may cause tenderness, redness and a raised area. Infection can add warmth, spreading redness, pus or increasing pain. A lump near the eyelid, nose or mouth deserves extra care because swelling can affect nearby structures.

A facial lump cannot be diagnosed reliably from its appearance. Its duration, texture, change in size, discharge and relation to shaving, cosmetics or an injury are useful details for a clinician.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry. A warm, clean compress may soothe a blocked area. Do not squeeze, pierce or repeatedly rub it; facial skin can become more inflamed and a deeper infection can develop. Avoid sharing towels, and pause products that sting the area.

Arrange a GP or dermatology review if the lump persists, returns, enlarges, leaves a scar, or does not respond to simple care. A clinician can decide whether it is a cyst, acne-related lesion, infection or another skin problem and select treatment accordingly.

Seek prompt medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, swelling around the eye, vision changes, difficulty opening the eye, or swelling near the nose with worsening headache. Urgent care is also appropriate if you feel very unwell or the area becomes soft and filled with pus.

Ask what type of lump is likely, whether it needs a sample or drainage, which skin products are suitable, and how to reduce recurrence. Mention any immune problems, recent medicines and previous similar lesions.
