Swollen and Numb Fingers: What to Know

Pressure on the median nerve at the wrist can cause symptoms in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, as in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Irritation of a nerve in the neck can send numbness into the arm and hand, as with Cervical Radiculopathy. Symptoms involving the ring and little fingers may relate to the ulnar nerve at the elbow, known as Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. Pressure near the shoulder or collarbone can affect nerves and blood vessels, as in Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Swelling after impact may narrow spaces around a nerve. Note which fingers are affected, whether symptoms worsen at night or with elbow bending, and whether grip strength, colour, or temperature has changed.

Remove tight rings and avoid leaning on the elbow or keeping the wrist sharply bent for long periods. Rest from activities that reproduce tingling, keep the hand comfortably raised, and protect it from heat or sharp objects while sensation is reduced. Do not use a tight wrap over numb fingers. A clinician may recommend nerve testing, splinting, exercises, or treatment directed at the source; Carpal Tunnel Release is one possible treatment for selected wrist nerve compression.

Seek emergency care for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech trouble, severe weakness, or loss of coordination. Urgent assessment is also needed if fingers become blue, pale, cold, severely painful, rapidly more swollen, or difficult to move. Arrange a review for persistent or recurring numbness, dropping objects, worsening grip, or symptoms that disturb sleep.
