Swollen Lips, Hands and Feet: What to Know

Swelling in several areas may follow an allergic reaction, including angioedema, where lip swelling is a presentation of the condition. It may also relate to salt or fluid balance, a medicine effect, inflammation, or another illness affecting the whole body. The pattern, speed of onset, and associated symptoms are more useful than the location alone.

Record whether both hands or feet are affected, whether pressing the skin leaves a dent, and whether the swelling is painful, red, warm, itchy, or linked to a new medicine or food. Breathlessness, reduced urination, chest discomfort, fever, or a one-sided painful limb changes the urgency.

Remove rings, tight bracelets, and tight footwear before swelling increases. Rest comfortably, avoid a suspected new food or product, and keep a list of medicines and supplements with their start dates. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. A clinician may need to examine the skin, breathing, circulation, and general health to identify the cause.

Call emergency services for throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent assessment for sudden widespread swelling, chest pain, severe headache, very little urine, fever with a hot painful area, or one-sided limb swelling with pain. Arrange prompt review even without these signs if the swelling is new, progressive, or recurrent.
