Swollen lips due to biting: what to know

Short answer
Swollen lips after biting usually reflect local injury, but heavy bleeding, a deep wound, infection, or airway symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Immediately
- Rinse gently, apply pressure to bleeding, and cool the outside of the lip
- Avoid
- Sharp foods, harsh antiseptics, and picking at the wound
- Arrange review
- For deep cuts, dental damage, infection signs, or repeated biting
What a bite can do
A bite can bruise or tear the lip, causing swelling, tenderness, a visible cut, or blood inside the mouth. Swelling may increase for a while after the injury. Bites from sharp teeth, broken dental work, or repeated chewing can leave a wound that is slow to settle. A bite does not explain every episode of lip swelling, so swelling without a clear injury, or swelling with hives or throat symptoms, may need assessment for another cause such as angioedema.
First aid for a bitten lip
Wash your hands, then rinse the mouth gently with clean water. Apply firm pressure with clean gauze or cloth if the cut is bleeding, and use a cold pack wrapped in fabric on the outside of the lip for short intervals. Choose soft foods and avoid hot, spicy, or sharp foods while the area is tender. Do not put alcohol or harsh antiseptics in the wound. A clinician or dentist can check a deep cut, a tooth injury, or repeated biting from an uneven surface.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent care if bleeding will not stop with steady pressure, the wound is deep or gaping, a tooth is loose or broken, swelling blocks swallowing, or breathing becomes difficult. Get prompt review for increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, numbness, or swelling that worsens after the initial injury. Arrange dental or medical assessment when biting keeps happening or the wound does not heal.
Questions for your clinician
Ask whether the wound needs closure, how to protect it while eating, whether a tooth or dental appliance caused repeated trauma, and which changes would suggest infection or a different cause of swelling.

Questions people ask
How long can a bitten lip stay swollen?
Swelling can remain while the injured tissue settles, but worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or persistent swelling warrants medical review.
Can a bitten lip become infected?
Yes. Increasing warmth, redness, pain, pus, or fever can indicate infection and should be assessed by a clinician.
