Swollen Lips From an Allergic Reaction: What to Do

Allergic lip swelling can begin suddenly after food, medicine, a sting, dental material, cosmetics or another exposure. It may occur with itching, hives, eyelid swelling, flushing, stomach upset, cough or wheezing. Swelling limited to the lips is not enough to identify the trigger or predict the course. Angioedema is a term used for deeper swelling of the skin and soft tissues and can occur with allergy or other causes.

Stop the suspected exposure and move away from it if possible. If you have a prescribed emergency medicine or action plan, follow those instructions exactly. For mild symptoms, contact a clinician or pharmacist about an appropriate antihistamine and check the label for cautions. Do not rely on home remedies if symptoms are progressing. Record the trigger, timing, foods, medicines and previous reactions so a clinician can plan further evaluation.

Call emergency services immediately for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, hoarse voice, faintness, collapse or difficulty swallowing. Rapidly spreading hives, repeated vomiting or severe dizziness also require urgent help. If an emergency injector has been prescribed, use it according to your action plan and seek emergency care even if symptoms improve. Do not drive yourself when severe symptoms are present.

Ask what exposure is most suspicious, whether you need an allergy referral, and what your written emergency plan should contain. Discuss medicines that may worsen reactions, when to use prescribed rescue treatment, and how to avoid accidental re-exposure.
