Swollen Lip With Pus: What It May Mean and What to Do

Pus is a collection of fluid, immune cells and germs. It may form around a cracked lip, bite, piercing, cold sore, shaving injury or a spot that has been squeezed. Tenderness, warmth, redness and a soft centre can occur with a small abscess. A dental or gum infection may also spread toward the lip. Swelling without pus can have other causes, including angioedema, but visible drainage makes a local problem more likely to need examination.

Do not squeeze, pierce or repeatedly wipe the area, since this can push infection deeper or irritate the skin. Wash your hands, gently clean the lip with clean water, and use a clean warm compress for short periods. Avoid sharing towels, lip products or utensils. Arrange a prompt medical or dental assessment, especially if the swelling is growing, the area is very tender, or drainage continues. Do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid cream unless a clinician has advised it.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing saliva. Get same-day care if redness is spreading, fever or chills develop, the eye or cheek becomes swollen, pain is severe, or you cannot open your mouth normally. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or recent facial surgery should seek advice early because infection can progress faster.

Ask whether the area needs drainage, whether a dental source is present, and which treatment is appropriate. Mention when the swelling began, how the pus looks, any injury or new product, medicines you use, and whether similar episodes have happened.
