Swollen lip: what to do now

Short answer
For a swollen lip, remove possible irritants, use a cool compress, and watch for change; urgent help is needed for airway symptoms, rapid progression, or signs of infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fever, pus, or spreading redness
Start by checking the pattern
Think about when the swelling began and what changed beforehand. Biting, heat, cold, dryness, a cosmetic, toothpaste, food, medicine, insect bite, dental work, or a lip procedure can all be relevant. Itching or hives can accompany an allergic response; tenderness, warmth, pus, or fever suggests inflammation or infection; a toothache suggests a dental source.
Deep swelling may be angioedema and can occur with or without hives. The symptom alone cannot establish its cause, so observe the whole pattern rather than relying on a single feature.
Practical steps
Apply a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth for short periods. Keep the lip clean, avoid rubbing or biting it, and pause new products or foods that seem linked to the episode. Use bland, fragrance-free protection on cracked outer skin only if it feels comfortable. Drink normally and choose gentle foods if chewing is sore.
Take a clear photograph and write down the start time, exposures, medicines, and accompanying symptoms. Do not pop a blister or draining spot, and do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately if the tongue or throat swells, breathing becomes difficult, swallowing is hard, the voice changes, you feel faint, or hives spread quickly. These are airway or severe-reaction warning signs.
Seek same-day care if swelling is rapidly increasing or comes with fever, pus, severe pain, spreading redness, a toothache, or trouble opening the mouth. Arrange routine assessment when episodes recur or fail to settle.
Questions for your doctor
What causes fit the timing and accompanying symptoms? Could a tooth, medicine, food, or personal-care product be involved? What action should I take if the swelling returns, and which symptoms require emergency help?

Questions people ask
Should I put ice directly on a swollen lip?

When should a swollen lip be checked?
Arrange assessment for recurrent, persistent, painful, infected-looking, or rapidly worsening swelling, and seek emergency help for airway symptoms.
