Swollen Lip and Side of Face: What to Know

The location can offer clues, but it cannot identify the cause by itself. Tenderness near a tooth, gum redness, fever, or pain when chewing can suggest a dental source. Itching, hives, or swelling that appeared quickly after a new exposure may fit angioedema, which causes deeper tissue swelling; see [Angioedema](/conditions/angioedema/) for an overview. A bite, sting, skin infection, blocked gland, or recent procedure can also affect one side. Record whether the skin is hot, whether the swelling is spreading, and whether the mouth or eye is involved.

Keep the area clean and avoid pressing, puncturing, or rubbing it. Stop a newly introduced cosmetic or oral product if it seems connected, and keep its label for review. A cool cloth can reduce discomfort when the skin is not broken. Drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing hurts. Do not rely on home treatment when swelling is progressing, or when tooth pain, fever, pus, or reduced mouth opening suggests a problem requiring dental or medical treatment.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Seek urgent assessment for eye involvement, severe pain, fever, spreading warmth or redness, pus, or inability to open the mouth normally. New facial drooping, weakness, confusion, or speech difficulty also requires emergency evaluation. Bring a list of medicines and recent exposures if you can do so safely.
