Short answer

A swollen knee can reflect fluid, inflammation, injury, or nearby muscle strain, so the right next step depends on its cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common description
Fullness, tightness, reduced bending, or visible puffiness around the knee.
Useful detail
Record when it started and whether activity, injury, or morning stiffness changes it.

What a swollen knee may mean

The fullness may come from fluid inside the joint, tissue irritation around the kneecap, or swelling after a twist, fall, or sudden increase in activity. A muscle problem near the thigh or calf can make the area feel tight, but muscle swelling is different from a knee effusion. A clinician may compare both knees, check movement and stability, and ask when the swelling began.

Possible explanations include a ligament injury such as an ACL Tear, a Meniscus Tear, Knee Bursitis, Gout, Knee Osteoarthritis, or a Baker's Cyst. These conditions can overlap in symptoms, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

What you can do now

Reduce activities that load the knee, especially running, jumping, deep squats, and kneeling. Rest the leg in a comfortable position and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Gentle movement within a comfortable range can help prevent stiffness; stop if pain or swelling increases. Do not massage a newly injured, hot, or markedly swollen area.

Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, returns, or limits walking. Depending on the findings, care may include exercise guidance, treatment for inflammation, or Joint Aspiration when fluid needs evaluation or relief.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care if the knee becomes red and hot with fever, pain escalates quickly, you cannot bear weight, the joint looks deformed, or the calf becomes newly swollen and painful. After an injury, prompt assessment is also sensible when the knee locks, gives way, or swells rapidly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what structure is swollen, whether you need imaging or fluid testing, which movements are safe, and how soon you should return for review. Mention any injury, fever, skin changes, new medicines, or history of gout.

Questions people ask

Is a swollen knee always a muscle problem?

No. Swelling may be inside the joint or in nearby tissues, while muscle strain is only one possible explanation.

Can I exercise with a swollen knee?

Choose gentle, comfortable movement and pause impact activities until the cause and safe level of loading are clearer.
