Swollen itchy lips: possible causes

Itching soon after a new lip balm, lipstick, toothpaste, food, medicine, or dental product can suggest contact or immediate allergy. Dryness, lip licking, wind, and fragranced ingredients can irritate the barrier and create a cycle of itch and rubbing. A sting may cause a focused area of swelling. Crusting, pus, fever, marked tenderness, or a spreading rash shifts concern toward infection or another inflammatory problem. The timing, distribution, and other body symptoms help a clinician separate these possibilities.

Stop suspected products and avoid the food or medicine you associate with the episode until a clinician advises you. Do not scratch, lick, or apply numbing products. A cool compress can reduce discomfort. If a prescribed emergency allergy plan or adrenaline auto-injector is available for you, follow that plan exactly. Keep a brief record of exposures, onset, progression, and any rash or breathing symptom.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt medical advice for fast progression, repeated unexplained episodes, fever, pus, severe pain, or swelling that does not begin to settle. Do not wait for a skin-only explanation when the mouth or airway may be involved.

Ask whether the timing fits contact allergy, food allergy, irritation, eczema, infection, or angioedema; whether testing is useful; and how to recognise an early airway reaction in future episodes.
