Swollen hooded eyelids: what to know

Short answer
Swollen hooded eyelids may come from irritation, allergy, fluid retention, or excess upper-eyelid skin, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clues
- Itching suggests irritation or allergy; warmth, pain, and discharge need assessment.
- Avoid
- Rubbing, squeezing, and applying unprescribed products close to the eye.
What it can mean
Hooded eyelids describe skin that folds over the upper lid. Age-related skin laxity, sometimes called dermatochalasis, can make this fold more noticeable, but sudden puffiness points more toward a temporary change. Cosmetics, contact-lens products, rubbing, eczema, seasonal allergy, a blocked gland, or an infection can irritate the delicate lid skin. One-sided swelling, tenderness, warmth, discharge, or a new lump deserves closer attention than mild puffiness affecting both sides.
A heavy lid can also narrow the field of vision when excess skin rests near the lashes. That functional change is different from ordinary morning puffiness and is worth describing during an assessment. See [Droopy Eyelids](/conditions/dermatochalasis/) for background on excess eyelid skin, and [Sagging Skin](/symptoms/sagging-skin/) for a related skin concern.
What you can do now
Pause new eye makeup, creams, lash adhesives, and contact lenses until the irritation settles. Do not rub or squeeze the lid. A clean cool compress over closed eyes can ease puffiness; use a separate clean cloth for each eye. Keep the area gently clean and avoid putting household products or unprescribed steroid creams near the eye. If lax skin is affecting vision, a clinician can discuss options such as [Plasma Pen Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/plasma-pen-treatment/), [Radiofrequency Skin Tightening](/treatments/laser-and-energy/radiofrequency-skin-tightening/), or [Eyelid Surgery](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/blepharoplasty/), depending on the cause and anatomy.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for swelling with trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange prompt assessment for severe eye pain, fever, marked redness, pain with eye movement, double vision, reduced vision, or an eye that becomes difficult to open. Contact a clinician if swelling is one-sided, keeps returning, follows an injury, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is from the skin fold, an eyelid gland, allergy, or infection; whether your vision is being affected; which products or medicines should be stopped; and which treatment is suitable if excess skin remains after the swelling resolves.

Questions people ask
Can hooded eyelids become puffy in the morning?
Yes. Overnight fluid shifts, salt, poor sleep, allergy, or irritation can make existing upper-lid folds look fuller temporarily.
Is eyelid surgery suitable for every swollen hooded eyelid?
No. Surgery addresses persistent excess skin, not untreated allergy, infection, or sudden swelling; an examination should establish the cause first.
