Swollen hands during pregnancy in the mornings

Pregnancy can change fluid balance and make swelling more noticeable after you have been still overnight. Fingers may feel tight when you wake and loosen as you move. Swelling can also be linked with heat, salty meals, reduced movement, or an existing joint problem. A swollen hand is a symptom, not a diagnosis; it does not by itself show that a particular condition is present.

Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling appears suddenly, affects your face, or comes with a severe headache, vision changes, pain under the ribs, unusual breathlessness, or feeling very unwell. These combinations require assessment during pregnancy.

Remove rings before fingers become tighter. Rest your hands at a comfortable raised position, open and close the fingers gently, and take regular walks or movement breaks if your maternity clinician allows. Keep fluids regular and avoid long periods with your hands hanging down. Do not start water tablets, anti-inflammatory medicine, or supplements for swelling without checking with your pregnancy care team.

Seek urgent maternity advice for rapid swelling, one-sided swelling with pain or colour change, chest pain, breathing difficulty, faintness, or the pregnancy warning symptoms described above. Arrange a routine review if swelling persists, keeps returning, limits finger movement, or is accompanied by numbness, warmth, redness, or joint pain. Keep a note of when it starts and whether both hands are affected.

Ask whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, whether your medicines can contribute to swelling, and which pain relief options are suitable in pregnancy. You can also ask whether your pattern fits ordinary pregnancy-related fluid changes or needs an assessment for another cause.
