Swollen hand after a bee sting: treatment and warning signs

Pain, redness, itching, and swelling around the sting are local skin reactions and may spread across part of the hand. The hand can feel tight because swelling has less room around the fingers, so rings should be removed promptly. Swelling that spreads beyond the hand, appears with hives, or affects the lips, tongue, throat, breathing, voice, or alertness may signal a serious allergic reaction. A worsening hot, tender area with fever later on may indicate infection rather than a simple local response.

Move away from the bee and check the skin. If a stinger remains, gently scrape it away with a firm edge; avoid squeezing the venom sac. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short intervals. Rest the hand above heart level and avoid scratching. A pharmacist can advise whether an oral antihistamine or suitable pain medicine is appropriate for you, especially if you take other medicines or have a chronic condition. Do not apply unknown household substances to broken skin.

Use an adrenaline auto-injector if it has been prescribed for you and follow your emergency action plan, then call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the mouth or tongue. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading hives or symptoms affecting more than the sting site. Arrange medical review if redness, warmth, pain, or drainage continues to worsen, or if finger movement becomes markedly restricted. Do not wait for swelling to settle if circulation or sensation changes.
