Swollen Hands and Feet: Possible Causes

Swelling on both sides may follow heat, prolonged standing, salt intake, medication effects, or a broader fluid-balance problem. Swelling limited to one hand or foot can follow an injury, infection, vein problem, or reduced movement. Joint inflammation can make several joints stiff and puffy; Rheumatoid Arthritis is one possible condition, while a wrist injury such as a distal radius fracture can explain swelling on the affected side. Note whether the skin is warm, red, shiny, or leaving a dent after pressure, and whether swelling is worse at a particular time.

Remove tight rings, shoes, and clothing before swelling increases. Elevate the affected limbs when resting, change position regularly, and take gentle walks or joint movements if comfortable and medically suitable. Keep a brief record of onset, symmetry, recent injury, new medicines, food or heat exposure, and associated symptoms. Do not start water tablets, compression garments, or anti-inflammatory treatment without checking that they are safe for you.

Arrange medical review if swelling persists, recurs, or is steadily increasing. Seek prompt care for one-sided swelling with pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness; fever; or a new rash. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, severe weakness, or a limb that becomes cold, blue, or numb.
