Swollen Hand After IV Treatment

An IV can irritate the vein or allow fluid to leak into the tissue around the insertion site. Swelling may be local or extend into the fingers, with tightness, coolness, tenderness, or skin colour change. The likely concern depends on what was infused, how much entered the tissue, and how the area looks and feels. Other conditions can also cause hand swelling, including inflammatory joint disease or an injury such as a distal radius fracture, so do not assume every swollen hand is caused by the IV.

If the IV is still in place, tell the nurse or clinician immediately so it can be checked before treatment continues. Keep the hand elevated and remove rings or tight items. Do not rub the site, apply heat or ice, or use a cream unless the treating team gives specific instructions, because the appropriate response depends on the infused substance. Marking the edge of redness can help show whether it is spreading.

Get prompt medical advice for increasing swelling, redness, warmth, drainage, tenderness, or a firm vein. Seek urgent help for blistering, severe pain, skin darkening, new numbness or weakness, or fingers that become pale, blue, or cold. Emergency symptoms such as breathlessness, facial swelling, or faintness require immediate care.

Ask what medicine or fluid was given, whether leakage is suspected, which compress or movement is appropriate, and when the site should be rechecked.
