Swollen gland on the side of the face

Lymph nodes near the jaw, ear and neck can enlarge when the body responds to a cold, sore throat, tonsillitis or another infection in the mouth, throat or skin. Glandular fever can cause several swollen nodes and marked tiredness. Mumps may cause swelling near the cheeks and jaw, while measles or rubella can combine swollen nodes with a rash and fever. The side of the face may also swell from a dental or salivary-gland problem rather than a lymph node.

Rest, drink fluids, and use a cool or warm compress according to what feels more comfortable. Do not repeatedly press or massage the lump. Check for tooth pain, sore throat, ear symptoms, fever or a rash, and avoid sharing utensils if an infectious illness is possible. Arrange an appointment if the swelling is not settling, keeps returning, or you cannot identify a nearby infection.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing facial swelling, severe pain, confusion or a stiff neck. Arrange prompt medical review for a hard or fixed lump, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, or swelling that continues to enlarge. A widespread rash with fever also needs same-day advice, especially after possible exposure to a contagious illness.

Ask whether the lump matches a lymph node, dental issue or salivary-gland problem, what examination or tests may help, and how long you should monitor it.
