Swollen fingers on the left hand only: what to know

One-sided swelling can follow a knock, repetitive gripping, a small wound, insect bite, or irritation around a tendon or joint. An unnoticed wrist injury can also affect the hand, including a distal radius fracture. Infection is more concerning when swelling is paired with increasing redness, warmth, drainage, or fever. Remove rings and bracelets early, before they become tight. Rest from gripping and keep the hand raised when comfortable. Photographing the hand and noting when the change began can help a clinician assess progression. Avoid using someone else’s prescription medicine.

Seek emergency help if the fingers become blue, pale, cold, severely numb, or impossible to move. Get prompt medical assessment for rapidly spreading redness, severe throbbing pain, pus, fever, or swelling after a significant injury. Arrange a review if the swelling does not settle, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by persistent morning stiffness or other joint symptoms. A clinician may check bones, tendons, circulation, nerves, and the skin.
