Swollen feet in pregnancy: what to do

Short answer
Mild swelling of the feet can happen in pregnancy as the growing uterus and hormonal changes affect fluid movement, but sudden swelling needs prompt advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Sudden swelling with headache or vision changes needs urgent maternity advice.
Why feet may swell
Pregnancy changes circulation and can make fluid collect in the feet and ankles, particularly later in the day or after warm weather and prolonged standing. Swelling that develops gradually in both feet and improves with rest is often less concerning. Sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe headache, visual changes, pain below the ribs or feeling very unwell can be signs of a pregnancy complication and should not be dismissed. One-sided painful swelling may have a different cause.
Steps that may help
Rest with your feet raised, change position regularly, and use gentle ankle movements or short walks if your maternity team has said activity is suitable. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid tight straps. Sleep on your side if that is comfortable, drink normally, and avoid standing still for long periods. Do not restrict fluids, take water tablets or use herbal products for swelling unless your maternity clinician recommends them. Mention persistent swelling at your next antenatal contact.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity unit or clinician urgently if swelling appears suddenly, is much worse on one side, or comes with a severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, upper abdominal pain, breathlessness, chest pain, or reduced movements from your baby. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, collapse or chest pain. Painful red calf swelling also needs urgent assessment.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, how much activity is appropriate, which warning symptoms matter for your stage of pregnancy, and who to call outside routine appointments.
