Swollen face, hands, and feet in the morning

Puffiness in several areas may be more noticeable after lying down overnight. Heat, salt, reduced movement, some medicines, allergies, and health conditions affecting fluid balance can contribute. Note whether rings or shoes feel tighter, whether the swelling improves as you move, and whether both sides look similar.

For someone who is pregnant, new swelling of the face and hands can be a presentation of pre-eclampsia. Swelling alone cannot establish that diagnosis, but a sudden change or symptoms such as headache, visual disturbance, upper-abdominal pain, or feeling unwell should not wait for a routine visit.

Remove tight rings, wear comfortable footwear, and move gently rather than staying still for long periods. Raise swollen feet when resting and avoid rubbing painful areas. Write down when the swelling starts, what improves it, and any new medicine or food exposure. If pregnant, check your blood pressure only with a validated device and follow your maternity team’s instructions about the reading.

Get urgent help for sudden swelling with severe headache, flashing lights, blurred vision, pain under the ribs, vomiting, or reduced fetal movement. Emergency symptoms include difficulty breathing, chest pain, tongue or throat swelling, fainting, seizure, or confusion. A single painful, hot, red, or much larger limb also needs urgent evaluation rather than home massage.

Ask whether your pattern calls for blood-pressure, urine, kidney, allergy, or medication review. If pregnant, ask when you should repeat the check and which symptoms mean you should go straight to hospital.
