Swollen face because of sunburn: what to know

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet injury. Inflamed facial skin can become red, hot, sore, and swollen as fluid enters the affected tissue. Eyelids may look especially puffy because the skin there is thin. Peeling can follow as damaged outer cells are shed during healing.

Blisters, severe tenderness, or swelling extending beyond the most exposed skin can indicate a more substantial injury. Headache, nausea, weakness, feverishness, or thirst may signal heat illness or dehydration rather than a local skin reaction alone.

Get out of direct sun and cool the skin with a damp cloth or cool shower. Sip fluids, rest, and apply a fragrance-free emollient gently to intact skin. Do not rub, exfoliate, peel loose skin, or break blisters. Keep using shade, clothing, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen on healed skin to prevent another burn.

Before using a steroid cream or any product near the eyes, ask a clinician or pharmacist whether it is suitable. Some products can irritate damaged skin or cause harm if they enter the eyes.

Arrange prompt care for extensive blistering, intense pain, marked eyelid swelling, eye pain, vision changes, spreading redness, pus, or fever. Seek emergency help for faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe weakness, or breathing difficulty. Children and people with significant health conditions may need advice sooner after a substantial burn.

Ask whether the burn is superficial or deeper, which emollient is appropriate, and whether swelling near the eyes needs examination. Ask how to manage pain, identify infection, and protect the area while it heals.
