Swollen eyelids and lips in the morning: what it can mean

Lying down overnight can make fluid more noticeable around the eyes, especially after crying, congestion, or a salty meal. A new pillow product, detergent, facial cream, lip balm, toothpaste, or medication can irritate exposed skin. Itchy eyelids, watery eyes, lip tingling, or repeated episodes after a particular exposure can fit an allergic pattern. Angioedema is a condition that can cause deeper swelling of the lips and eyelids, sometimes without a rash.

Write down what you ate, used on your skin, and took the previous day, along with whether the swelling improves after getting up. Do not deliberately repeat a suspected trigger to test it.

Remove contact lenses and rinse the face gently if a product may have entered the eyes. Use a cool clean compress, avoid rubbing, and pause new cosmetics or lip products. Do not use someone else’s eye drops or take a new medicine without checking that it is suitable for you. If episodes recur, arrange a clinician review with photographs and a list of recent products, foods, and medicines.

Get emergency help immediately for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, wheezing, faintness, or trouble swallowing. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly worsening facial swelling, severe eye pain, vision change, fever, spreading redness, or repeated unexplained episodes. Swelling can progress quickly, so do not wait for a rash to appear before seeking help.

Ask whether the timing suggests allergy, irritation, fluid retention, or angioedema; which exposures should be avoided; whether an emergency plan is needed; and what symptoms should prompt immediate treatment.
