Swollen Bottom Lip After an Allergic Reaction

The lower lip can swell after contact with food, medicine, dental products, cosmetics, or an insect sting. Angioedema is swelling in deeper skin tissue and may occur with hives, itching, warmth, or no skin rash. A local reaction does not predict how the episode will develop, so monitor your tongue, throat, voice, swallowing, and breathing closely.

Stop the suspected exposure and gently rinse the mouth or skin if a product touched it. Keep a record of what you ate, took, applied, or encountered and when the swelling began. Use only an allergy medicine or emergency medicine already recommended for you, following its instructions. Do not re-test the suspected trigger at home.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, hoarseness, wheezing, breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt medical advice even if symptoms remain limited to the lip when the cause is new, the swelling is increasing, or episodes recur. A clinician can review possible triggers and an emergency plan.
