Swollen Bartholin gland without pain: what to know

The Bartholin glands sit beside the lower vaginal opening and release lubricating fluid. If the duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect and form a cyst that feels like a smooth lump, often on one side. A cyst may be painless until it becomes infected. A lump in this area can also be mistaken for an irritated skin gland, a vaginal-wall swelling, or another vulval condition, so location and examination matter. A new lump, a firm area, bleeding, skin change, or a swelling that persists deserves a clinician’s assessment.

Keep the area clean with lukewarm water and avoid squeezing, piercing, or trying to drain the lump yourself. Wear breathable underwear and avoid friction if the area feels irritated. A warm bath may soothe mild discomfort, but it will not establish the cause. Arrange an appointment with a GP or gynaecology clinician, particularly if the lump is new, enlarges, returns, or you are older than the usual childbearing years. Mention discharge, sexual-health concerns, pregnancy, and any previous episodes.

Seek same-day advice if pain develops quickly, the area becomes red or hot, pus appears, fever occurs, or sitting and walking become difficult; these changes can indicate an abscess. Seek urgent help for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, or inability to pass urine. Even without pain, arrange an examination for a persistent, firm, irregular, or bleeding lump rather than relying on home treatment.
