Swollen and Itchy Feet During Pregnancy: What to Know

Short answer
Swollen and itchy feet during pregnancy may reflect normal fluid changes, irritated skin, fungal infection, or a condition needing prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Fluid retention, heat, irritation, eczema, or fungal infection
- Useful observation
- Record whether itching is strongest on the soles or between the toes
What it can mean
Pregnancy can increase fluid in the feet and ankles, especially later in the day. Tight shoes, heat, sweating, and stretched skin can add to discomfort. Peeling between the toes may point toward Athlete's Foot, while a rash after a new soap, shoe, sock, or cream can fit Contact Dermatitis. Small intensely itchy blisters on the sides or soles can occur with Dyshidrotic Eczema. Itching without much of a rash, particularly on the palms or soles, should be discussed promptly with your maternity team because pregnancy-related cholestasis can need testing.
What you can do now
Rest with your feet raised, choose roomy breathable footwear, and avoid prolonged standing. Wash gently, dry carefully between the toes, and use a plain fragrance-free moisturiser on dry skin, keeping it out of damp spaces between toes. Do not scratch blisters or apply a medicated cream without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy. Note when the swelling and itching began, whether one foot is worse, and any new products or medicines.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for sudden or rapidly increasing swelling, severe itching without a clear rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or pain under the ribs. Seek urgent help for one-sided swelling with warmth or calf pain, chest pain, breathlessness, facial swelling, or a severe headache with vision changes. These patterns need assessment rather than home treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be eczema, contact irritation, fungal infection, or a pregnancy-related cause? Do I need liver or other tests? Which moisturiser or antifungal treatment is suitable for me? What changes should make me call the maternity unit?

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy cause itchy feet without a rash?
Yes. Itching can occur with dry or stretched skin, but marked palm or sole itching without a rash should be reported to the maternity team.
Can I treat peeling feet while pregnant?
Keep the area dry and ask a clinician or pharmacist to confirm a pregnancy-appropriate product before using an antifungal or steroid cream.
